How important is life skills for students?

In a new survey by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, nearly 60% of alumni surveyed said the importance is “very important,” and 61% said it is “somewhat important.”

About 40% of the alumni said the emphasis is “not too important,” while 11% said the focus is “moderately important,” 10% said “not at all important,” 7% said not at all, and 5% said they were unsure.

About 60% said college and career readiness is “extremely important” to them, and 43% said that is the highest level they felt is important.

About 43% of college graduates said that their college education was at the “very top” of their priority list, and 37% said their college experience was “at the very top” for them.

More than half (55%) of alumni said their schools are “doing a great job” of supporting students’ interest in life skills, while 37% were satisfied with that and 17% were dissatisfied.

About a quarter (25%) said they had little or no experience of life skill training at their school.

Nearly three quarters (73%) of the respondents said they did not feel that life skills training is a worthwhile investment for their school, while 28% felt that it is a “critical investment.”

More than two-thirds (67%) of respondents said life-skill training is either “very” or “slightly” important, while 22% said life skills are “not very” or not “slight” important.

More than a quarter of respondents (26%) said their high school life-savings were at “the very top of their list” of priorities.

About two-in-five (22%) said that life-saving resources in their high schools are less than adequate for the level of student learning they need.

More college graduates reported having life skills-focused classes (54%) than those with only a high school education (46%).

More than one-quarter (27%) of high school graduates said they spent more time in class to learn life skills.

About one-third (35%) of college grads reported spending at least 50% of their time in classes to learn about life skills or life skills topics.

About 30% of students in their mid-20s who said they “did not have any” life- skills training said they attended class in the fall or early spring to learn more about life-savers.

About half (50%) of students who reported having more than one life-saving resource reported attending classes in the spring or early fall to learn the latest information about life.

About eight in ten (78%) college graduates who reported they had at least one life saving resource reported that they attended classes in fall or spring.

About three in ten college graduates (31%) who reported spending a lot of time in their classes said they participated in life- saving activities.

About a quarter said they used a life-gaining resource to learn a life skill, such as a car, a home or a career.

About six in ten respondents who reported using a life saving activity to learn skills said they took the time to attend classes in spring or summer to learn what they needed to know.

More students reported spending time in school to learn how to use life skills (73%), while only about a quarter reported doing so in their early 20s.

About 13% of respondents who had spent a lot time in college said they received life skills in their college educations, and about 15% said those courses were “very helpful.”

About 10% of high schools reported that the number of life saving resources in a high-school classroom was very high.

More respondents reported having spent a long time in high- school to gain the skills they needed (42%) than to spend a long period of time to gain their first skills (20%).

About 40 percent of respondents reported that “they have been able to learn some of the life skills that they need” at some point in their life.

About one-in four (26% of surveyed students) reported that their learning had been “modest at best.”

About a third (33%) of surveyed high school seniors said they have “learned enough about life” to take a career seriously.

About 17% of people in the survey said they planned to take life-care work in their late 20s or early 30s.

More people are taking life-hacking classes (34%) than in their 20s (27%).

About a third of respondents were taking a job in their 30s or 40s, and 10% in their 50s or 60s.

About half (49%) of those surveyed said they plan to take at least part-time or part-year work while in high schools.
